LUCKY FOR ME, SID was a night owl and was still awake after three in the morning. Normally, I'd be in bed by now but after the failed robbery at the Phoenix guild and then Gracie Lou’s visit, it was becoming a late night for all of us.

“What is it now?” Sid’s voice was husky as if he had just woken up, or was in the middle of something particularly steamy. A part of me hoped it was the prior.

I shoved that part down and pressed my ear closer to the phone, “Did we wake you?”

“No. I mean yes,” there was talking in the background and glasses clinking together. Sid let out a yawn, “Sorry. I’m still at the bar. I’m afraid I fell asleep for a moment while doing the books.”

My lips ticked up on their own, “Bossman falling asleep on the job. What will the other demons say?”

“Are you teasing me, angel?” he asked with that playful tone that he used to use with me in his voice.

“No,” I forced myself to frown and glared at the demon cuffed to Trisha’s desk.

While Trisha had gotten her phone and called Sid, I had found a pair of handcuffs Thompson had given me as a precaution. He was tired of me incapacitating our leads before he could arrive to question them. I didn’t know how he thought having handcuffs would keep me from exorcising their butts if they got too lippy. But in this case, the cuffs had proved handy.

They wouldn’t keep the demon at bay for long but that’s why I still had my gun out, ready to shoot if he so much as flinched. I’d tried to send Trisha home but she had refused to leave me by myself. As if she could help in any way. I suppose it was probably a good time to start teaching her to shoot. Then at least if she was attacked by demons she could use holy bullets to get rid of them.

“Then why are you calling me?” Sid asked again, forcing my thoughts back to the half-demon on the phone.

“I need a favor.”

“Another one, angel?” Sid sighed heavily. “Haven’t you gotten yourself into enough trouble already? I don’t want to be the reason you end up back in hell.”

“I didn’t know you cared about me that much,” I retorted.

Gracie Lou laughed. A cackle that belonged in a horror movie, and not in my waiting area.

“What’s so funny?” I asked moving my mouth away from the phone.

“Here I am, cuffed to your chair and you are chit-chatting with your lover,” she began to laugh hysterically banging her hand against the surface of the desk.

“Mary?” Sid said in my ear, “What’s going on? Who was that?”

Ignoring his questions, I pointed the gun back at Gracie Lou, “Shut your mouth before I give you another one.”

“Oh, but you wouldn’t want to hurt your precious girl, now would you?” Gracie Lou pouted and then gave me an evil smile.

“No, but that doesn’t mean I
